Integrative Health Coaching is a way of teaming up with clients to use thoughtful inquiry, accountability, goal clarification, goal creation, identification of barriers, leverage of support systems, and connection to intrinsic motivation, vision, and values to enhance health through enjoyable, client-driven behavior change. The coach uses skills and client centered methods to support clients' sustainable, holistic lifestyle.
Currently, there is no national or state accrediting organization to oversee the practice of all health coaches. This means that there isn't technically any form of licensing to work as a health coach. This makes it essential to work with coaches with high quality training and education. Michael Rasley, director of High Prana Health, went through two courses (with Duke), mentoring, and passed Duke Integrative Medicine's Certified Health Coaching program oral coaching examination.
Health coaching is different from working with an expert who tells you what to do based on the goals you have. Although health coaches typically hold a background in your focus area they don't offer information or opinions unless asked. In the health coaching role, the coach steps out of the expert role (while leveraging coaching skills and methodologies) and allows the client to decide how they would like to approach change. This allows for maximal client learning, skill acquisition, and empowerment. The health coaching process is a highly customized approach which takes into account your personal goals, strengths, and enjoyment factor.
